What is Noticing?

Noticing is about paying attention to what’s around us and giving thought to things often overlooked. It’s a newsletter about exploring what catches our eye and giving it a second glance - it’s about cultivating something meaningful in our everyday experiences. When we give thought to what we notice, we discover how those thoughts might pique curiosity and inspire courage. When we share those observations with others, we can feel a sense of solidarity and kinship. We are not alone.

In sharing these things, you will get to know me. I open up and share personal, funny and idiosyncratic stories. I share challenges, struggles and triumphs in order to build a connection with you and to learn from the thoughts my reflections may kindle. I am willing to be vulnerable because when I have let others see me as I truly am, I have been able to develop deeper, more meaningful relationships. My musings will cover a range of topics but generally fall into three buckets:

  • Perspective: Our perspective is inherently constrained by the individual lens through which we view the world-shaped by age, geography, life experiences and personal beliefs. Appreciating perspective often involves seeking out other lenses, embracing paradox and favoring “and” instead of limiting ourselves to “or.”

  • Parenting: I think I learn more from my kids than I teach them! My husband and I are currently homeschooling, and some of my observations relate to our approach to educating two young boys.

  • Philosophy: I majored in religion and love pondering the big questions about life and how we seek meaning. I’m not afraid to dive into the tough stuff!

This is a new endeavor for me, and I am excited to see where it may lead. On writing, Anne Lamott says, “There is no point gathering an audience and demanding its attention unless you have something to say that is important and constructive.” My hope is that this will feel constructive, thought-provoking and meaningful - something you look forward to seeing in your inbox. I’d love to think that when you read my reflections, it feels like a conversation with an old friend, a comforting blanket or a warm cup of tea - something that we will grow together because you feel that it belongs to you as much as it does to me.

Welcome to “noticing,” a collection of my thoughts and ideas that connect us as we navigate our place in this wild world.
